  • I would like to be a new client this year. What do I do first?

    First, welcome to our family! Here’s how the process usually unfolds.

    1. Set an appointment—Call us and we’ll set up a free half-hour consultation.
    2. Show up and bring the following documents—This will give us the chance to get to know you.

    Here’s a basic list of what we’d like you to bring to your appointment:

    Income Documents

    • Last year or 2 of tax returns- we always double check last year’s return for maximum refunds
    • W-2s
    • 1099’s
    • K-1
    • Rental income
    • other income Documentation

    Investments Documents (1099-B, 1099-R)

    • IRA
    • Stocks & Bonds

    Expenses and Deductions Documents:

    • Receipts categorized and totaled
    • Donations
    • Real estate & Property Tax receipts
    • Your books

  • How long have you been in business?

    Midwest Bookkeeping was established in 1919. This has been family owned/operated for more than 45 years. Janet Downs, the current owner, has been employed here since 1977 and purchased the business in 1998 from Marlene Downs, her mother-in-law. We currently have 4 staff members. Every member of the staff can answer questions and will do whatever we can to keep our clients satisfied.

  • How long do I keep my tax old tax returns?

    We usually recommend you keep all tax documents for 7 years from the date you filed, please see our record retention guide for a more detailed list of documents.

  • How does the tax return get processed at Midwest Bookkeeping?

    You may schedule a 30 minute meeting or just drop off all of your required tax documents. We then take that information and process the return. Our goal is to get you the completed return within 5 working days or less. Once the return is completed, you return to sign and review the tax return. Payment is due when you pick up the tax return. We accept Cash, Check or Charge (Discover, Mastercard, or Visa)

  • What types of payment do you take?

  • How fast will I get my tax refund? How do I track my refund?

    We are required to file all tax returns electronically. The refund can be direct deposited into your bank account or a physical check can be mailed to your address of record. Each year the IRS gives a guideline for when to expect the refund. Usually the federal refund will be in your bank within 10 business days. To track your refund click here.

  • I live and work in separate states. Can you help me with my tax return?

    Of Course!  This is definitely not a problem for us.

    The most common scenario is clients who live in Missouri and work in Kansas, or vice versa. We prepare returns in more than 20 states across America.
